San Diego Trip and a Broken Arm

We returned last night from our vacation to San Deigo, California.  However, Lincoln had only been at school a couple of hours today when I got a call that he had fallen from the monkey bars.  After a quick trip to the emergency room, we confirmed that Lincoln indeed has a broken arm.  He has been very brave.  He has a splint right now, and he'll get a cast next week once the swelling has gone down.  He does think its a little exciting that this is his first broken limb.  We'll see how long that excitement lasts.  Here he is with his splint and sling.

Before all the excitement of an injured appendage, we had a wonderful time in San Diego.  When we first arrived, we visited a restored sailing ship called the Star of India.  Lincoln and Marina had fun poking about all the areas of the ship.

We also got to check out some other historic ships and replicas, including the boat on which the movie Master and Commander was filmed and a couple of submarines.

Here is Marina demonstrating how small the doorways were in the Russian submarine.
Lincoln, Marina, and Will tried out the sleeping accommodations aboard the submarine.  Lincoln liked his current bed better.

The Ferry had a beautiful passenger deck, that Marina thought was a church.  In her defense, there were lots of rows of benches and stained glass.
As soon as we arrived at our beach house for the week, we headed for a few minutes on the beach.

Bright and early the next morning, we went to Legoland.  It was a very fun day with lots of rides.  As a serious lego lover, Lincoln really loved this place!

This was Marina's favorite ride of the day.  Although she loved all the roller coasters too!  She liked to ride all the fast rides as long as she could hold someone's hand.

Rina does like her ice cream.
Ryan rode with the kids on the log flume.  The part that they liked the best was when they splashed Kara and Will's log on their way down.
There were some pretty awesome lego animals.

Marina got her first driving lesson.  She was not the worst driver on the course, but she needs quite a bit of practice before she can take over a car.
We also enjoyed the lego safari ride.

Marina took a liking to having her photo taken in front of just about everything she saw.  The huge tree made of legos was pretty cool.

Day two was SeaWorld.  First thing, Marina found a turtle (one of her favorite animals) to have her photo taken with.
Photos with Kara and her brother were also acceptable.
We got to pet starfish and feed bat rays.  Marina also decided that she liked to pose special for every photo.  She started having so much fun posing that she announced that when she grows up, she wants to be a poser.  I quite sure she means a model more than a poser.

 The whole family at SeaWorld.
At SeaWorld, we saw the killer whale show and a dolphin show called Blue Horizon.  The main character in that show was a girl named Marina.  So, naturally, grandma made sure that Marina got the Marina Barbie before we left.  This is the Marina Barbie in a ballet pose.
Day three was the Wild Animal Park, where the San Diego Zoo keeps and breeds many animals in what is close to their natural habitat.  Marina's favorite part was that we got to see a baby cheetah.  It was so cute!  It was raining off and on all day, so we all sported our best rain gear for a good part of the day.

The rain did not dampen Marina's interest in making beautiful poses for all her photos.

Marina and Petra became really good friends during the trip - Marina taught Petra lots of words and fun things to do, and Petra put up will all the love Marina showed her all the time.  Marina had a nearly-constant need to give Petra hugs.
The petting zoo part of the park was a lot of fun.

One of the many poses of Marina.

We also went for a safari ride so we could see some of the animals up close.

That's a lion behind these two.
Lincoln got into posing for a camera a little.

We also got to see a grown-up cheetah up very close.  She was on a leash, but she did look intently at some of the smaller children who were around.  This and the gorillas were Lincoln's favorite.

Both kids were champs at our rainy day at the Wild Animal Park.

Day four was at Balboa Park - with lots of fun places to visit.  Marina practiced her letter at the Science Center.  She has learned to find the word exit all over the place - we saw it enough that she can spell it on her own!

We had a little rain, but in between showers, it was a beautiful day.

Here is Marina entertaining us all at the Model Railroad Museum.
At the San Diego Historical Center, there was a fun exhibit with costumes from the Old Globe Theatre.  We had a lot of fun there.

We had a great trip!  Now Petra and Marina are the best of friends, and we had all had a great time with the family!
